Fort Leavenworth Honors Harry Hollowell

 

On June 19, 2009, the U.S. Army Combined Arms Command (CAC) and Fort Leavenworth celebrated the achievements and legacy of Chief Warrant Officer (Ret) Harry Hollowell with a road dedication. CWO Hollowell began his career at Fort Leavenworth in the 1930s as an enlisted Buffalo Soldier and during his 30-year career became the first African-American bandmaster and reached the rank of Chief Warrant Office 4. The site of the new Hollowell Drive is one block west of Hancock Ave. off of Hunt Road (the housing road nearest the Hancock Gate). 6/23/09

WOUNDED WARRIOR AMPUTEE GRADUATES FROM WOCS

 

Warrant Officer (WO1) Johnathan Holsey, the first Army amputee to attend warrant officer school, has his new rank pinned by his sons at his graduation ceremony. Holsey, an Army human resources technician, made Army history as the first Army amputee to attend Warrant Officer School and to pin on warrant officer bars. He was injured in Iraq in 2004 by an improvised explosive device, and had his left leg amputated below the knee - see more. 6/16/09

 

 

MEMORIAL DAY REMEMBRANCE 2009

 

The Southern Arizona Veterans Memorial Cemetery is the youngest of the two Veterans Cemeteries in Arizona. There are presently over 2300 internees from the Southeastern Arizona Counties of Cochise, Pima and Santa Cruz. The cemetery is operated by the Arizona Department of Veterans Services and annually they select a veterans organization to plan and host the Ceremony. This year, the Arizona Silver Chapter, USAWOA was honored to be selected. (See pictures and more) 6/2/09

 

 

Ordnance Center, schools host symbolic ending to an era

on Aberdeen Proving Ground

 

The flags and guidons of the Headquarters, U.S. Army Ordnance Center and Schools, Ordnance Mechanical Maintenance School and Ordnance Munitions and Electronics Maintenance School floated on an agreeable breeze as the Army's largest corps presented a symbolic end to its 92-year stay at Aberdeen Proving Ground during its School Colors Casing ceremony at Ordnance Circle,  May 8. Along with local, state and county politicians and public servants, guests included the 2009 OC&S Hall of Fame inductees who were honored during a ceremony at the Ordnance Museum earlier in the week. The ceremony included an 11-gun Howitzer salute to Collyar by the OMMS Salute Battery led by Chief Warrant Officer 2 Eric Pelt and Staff Sgt. Eric Banks and music by the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command Band. Retired Chief Warrant Officer 5 Harold DeBerry, former OC&S Regimental warrant officer, called the upcoming move "exciting." "I visited the campus [at Fort Lee] and saw how things will be much better for the Soldiers," he said. "This is not a closing, just a movement and the start of a new chapter in Ordnance Corps history."- see complete story 6/2/09

Noncommissioned Officer, Soldier, and Civilian of the Year

 

The Chief of the Adjutant General's Corps, COL Robert L. Manning, is pleased to announce the winners of this year's Adjutant General's Corps Officer, Warrant Officer, Noncommissioned Officer, Soldier, and Civilian of the Year.  A record number of nominations were received this year from across our Army.  The voting was extremely close and some of the finest in our Corps were chosen. The Warrant Officer of the Year winners are: 1st - CW2 Qasim Sattar, Warrant Officer Career College, Ft Rucker, AL; 2nd - CW3 Aner Henriquez, Jr., 7th SF Group (Airborne) Ft Bragg, NC; and 3rd - CW2(P) Anthony Cavalieri, IV, Joint Special Operations Command, Ft Bragg, NC - see more. 5/21/09

 

 

Warrant Officer Strength Manager of the Year

 

USAWOA Member CW3 Jack Modesto was named the Army National Guard Warrant Officer Strength Manager Recruiter of the Year 2008. CHAPTER PARTICIPATES IN PROJECT TO ASSIST VETERAN

 

On 18 and 25 April 2009, members of the Crater Chapter of USAWOA  joined with other volunteers to work with Rebuilding Together Petersburg on the on the home of Mr. and Mrs. Tillman.  Mr. Tillman served 30 years in the Army including tours of duty in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars earning him two Purple Hearts.  Upon retirement from the military he then served as a Deputy Sheriff.  Recently suffering from a stroke, he is now confined to a wheelchair.  Volunteers made repairs to his home which included remodeling the bathroom to make it wheelchair accessible. Rebuilding Together Petersburg brings volunteers and the community together to improve the homes and lives of low-income homeowners. Volunteers join with skilled trades people painting, cleaning, weatherizing and doing carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work..  Homeowners must be low-income and elderly, disabled or families with children, and unable to do the work themselves. All repairs are free for homeowners and labor and many supplies are donated. 5/19/09

 

 

CW4 Balvanz Leads Fife and Drum Corps in Unit’s 13th Inaugural Parade

 

The Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps, commanded by CW4 Gregory S. Balvanz, had the privilege and honor of leading President Barack Obama in the 56th Presidential Inaugural Parade.  The Corps has marched in every Inaugural Parade since John F. Kennedy's Inauguration in 1961.

Chief Balvanz has been the Commander of The Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps since August 2004.  January's Inaugural Parade was his second time marching alongside the Corps for an Inauguration.

 

"It's an honor to participate in an Inauguration once in your lifetime, but I have had the fortunate pleasure to participate in it twice," he said.
