Bronze medallions available for headstones - The Department of Veterans Affairs is offering bronze medallions to attach to existing, privately purchased headstones or markers, signifying a deceased's status as a Veteran. The new item can be furnished instead of a traditional government headstone or marker for veterans whose death occurred on or after Nov. 1, 1990, and whose grave in a private cemetery is marked with a privately purchased headstone or marker - see more. 7/6/2010

VA Increasing Prescription Costs - An increase in Veterans out-of-pocket payments for VA pharmaceuticals is scheduled for July 1, 2010, after being delayed in January. The $1 increase will bring to $9 the copayments facing Veterans for each 30-day supply of medicine for the treatment of conditions not related to military service. The yearly maximum out-of-pocket payment for pharmaceuticals for non-service-related conditions is scheduled to increase to $1,080. There are no copayments associated with the treatment of conditions related to military service. The cap will not apply to Veterans in priority groups seven and eight. New VA benefits claim form: Just 6 pages - After years of complaints from veterans about having to fill out a 26-page-long benefits claims form for the Veterans Affairs Department, the Office of Management and Budget has approved VA’s new six-page form. VA spokesman Steve Westerfeld confirmed in a voicemail that VA had shortened VA Form 21-526, as well as creating a new “express claim” form, or 21-526EZ, which is six pages long and requires that the veteran provide his own medical and military records, rather than waiting for VA to gather them. 2010 Benefits Guide Now Available - The VA 2010 guide to "Federal Benefits for Veterans, Dependents, and Survivors" is now available online.  This is the all-in-one place to learn about the benefits to which you or a family member might be entitled.

VA Updates Online Application for Health Benefits - Veterans will find it easier and faster to apply for their health care benefits now that the Department of Veterans Affairs has updated its online Form 10-10EZ, "Application for Health Benefits."  This revised online application provides enhanced navigation features that make it easier and faster for Veterans to apply for their health care benefits.  This new version also allows Veterans to save a copy of the completed form for their personal records. The most significant enhancement allows Veterans to save their application to their local desktop and return to the application at any time without having to start over.  Previously, Veterans had to complete the form in a single session. Veterans may complete or download the 10-10EZ form at the VA health eligibility website at https://www.1010ez.med.va.gov/sec/vha/1010ez. Veterans may also contact VA at 1 (877) 222-8387 (VETS) or visit the VA health eligibility website at www.va.gov/healtheligibility. 5/18/10

The National Resource Directory, a DoD and VA initiative, has redesigned and enhanced its Web site at www.NationalResourceDirectory.gov. Created for service members, veterans, wounded warriors, and their families and caregivers, NRD is a tool for service providers to reach out to the military and veterans communities. It provides access to thousands of services and resources at the national, state and local levels to support recovery, rehabilitation and community reintegration. A few features of the new Web site include a faster, more robust search engine, a Bookmark & Share capability to spread the word on Facebook, Twitter etc; and an "In the News" feature that provides links to news and updates about wounded warrior and veterans issues. Also included is an expanded homeless assistance section where users can find information on programs and benefits designed to help homeless veterans live as independently as possible. Additionally, the National Resource Directory would like to be sure to include the local resources in your area. If you are aware of community programs and services that should be available to veterans, please submit them for review to the Suggest A Resource feature on the NRD.
