Alfred E. “Al” Cox was born on 24 July1938 in Claiborne County Tennessee. He entered the Regular Army on 26 May 1958 as a Private E-1.  He completed Basic Training at Ft Chaffee, AR and advanced Signal and Intelligence Training at Ft Monmouth, NJ:  He was assigned to Korea on 11 May 1959 where he was promoted to Specialist 5 (E-5) and was transferred to the 69th Signal Battalion Ft. Meade MD on 7 June 1960. He received an Honorable discharged from the US Army on 11 April 1961. He enlisted in the United States Air Force as a Staff Sergeant (E-5) on 12 April 1961 and was assigned to the 1370th Photo Mapping Wing at Turner Air Force Base in Albany GA:  He received an Honorable discharge from the US Air Force on 16 April 1965. He returned to his former employment with Western Electric Inc. in Knoxville, TN on 1 May 1965:  Mr. Cox reenlisted into the US Air Force on 14 October 1965 and was assigned to the Military Airlift Command (MAC) at Hunter Air Force Base in Savannah, GA. 

 

He accepted an appointment as Reserve of the Army Warrant Officer 1 (WO1) on 15 February 1967.

17th Aviation Group Headquarters APO 96316 RVN 22 July 1970  Group Avionics Officer,  Group Communications Security Officer, Acting Group Signal Officer:   3rd Armored Division, 122nd Maintenance Battalion 1 April 1971, Avionics Officer, Electronic Maintenance Platoon Leader, Hanau Germany:  

 

White House Communication Agency, The White House, Washington, DC as a Presidential Communication Officer 1974 - 1978.

 

CW3 (Promotable) Cox retired from the Army on 31 December 1978 with 20 years, 1 month and 8 days total military service.

 

He entered civil service with the United States Department of Defense 1 June 1979.  He remained in civil service employment for fifteen years and attained the grade of GM-15/step 10, retiring on 31 May 1994, with a combined military and civilian service of 35 years 1 month and 8 days of total government service.

 

Civilian Education

 

Mr. Cox is a graduate of Claiborne County High School (1956) in Tazewell, Tennessee. He is a graduate of the Atlanta School of Radio and Television and attended the University of Maryland, majoring in criminal justice.  He has attended extensive courses in executive management and development, counterterrorism, operation security, hostage negotiation, communication, intelligence and aircraft maintenance and aviation.
